Diplomacy:when Macron snubs Alpha Condé to congratulate Ouattara's re-election
French President Emmanuel Macron sent a message of congratulations to President Alassane Dramane Ouattara of Côte d'Ivoire on his re-election in the October 31 presidential election last weekend. “Following the confirmation by the Constitutional Council of your re-election, I wanted to congratulate you and send you and the Ivorian people all my best wishes”.
In his message, Mr. Macron said that “the dialogue you initiated on the 11th with President Henri Konan Bédié is a bearer of hope. I hope that this first step towards unification and openness can lay the concrete foundations for a broader, more lasting reconciliation between all Ivorians and all political sensitivities with respect for the rule of law in order to turn the page of violence and division. ”
If Emmanuel Macron, president of the former colonial power, congratulated Mr. Ouattara, this is not the case for President Alpha Condé, who was re-elected under the same conditions since they are all running for a third term.
Thus, nearly ten days after the confirmation of the victory of President Alpha Condé, candidate for his succession, by the Constitutional Court, France has still not yet sent him the slightest message of congratulation. However, Guinea organized its presidential election two weeks before Côte d'Ivoire.
On the side of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mamadi Touré confirmed this information. To my knowledge, he said, France has not yet sent a congratulatory message to President Alpha Condé.
On the other hand, all our attempts to reach the French Embassy in Guinea to understand the reasons for this situation, have been unsuccessful until the moment we put this dispatch online.
Is this delay a simple oversight or a formal malfunction at the Elysée or Quai d'Orsay or is it the sign of a new tension between Conakry and Paris? In any case, the hours, days or weeks to come will edify us on this situation which already casts strong suspicions on the very fluctuating bilateral relations between Guinea and France since 1958
