Having gone all the way to penalties in the Africa Cup of Nations final just a month earlier, Egypt and Senegal had to be separated by yet another shootout in their World Cup qualification playoff, with Senegal booking their place in the winter tournament after Sadio Mane netted the winning penalty.
Egypt had won the first leg 1-0 in the first week of this international break, but Hamdi Fathi’s fourth-minute own goal allowed the African champions to go level on aggregate.
