The big spacole that Senegal with the new fishing agreement with the EU
The new fisheries agreement between the EU and Senegal is captivating. An agreement which authorizes 28 freezer purse seiners, ten pole-and-line vessels and five Spanish, Portuguese and French longliners to fish up to 10,000 tonnes of tuna per year. Senegal is the loser. If we know that tuna, this luxury fish, is sold at high prices in Europe and around the world. To hear the delegation of the European Union speak of a "win-win partnership" is more than appalling. A little calculation makes you want to strangle yourself. The kilogram of tuna is sold in Europe at 30 euros. Knowing that 10,000 tons make 10,000,000 kilograms, at a rate of 30 euros per kilo, the 10,000 tons make 300,000,000 euros, or 196,931,205,000 CFA francs. Out of this big jackpot, Senegal only earns 3 million euros (2 billion CFA francs), or 1/100 of the real value of the product. “The poor people who are there, 50% of them make a living from fishing. We are going to bring in the big European merchant navy which will scrape everything. And the poor people who are there, when they will be ruined, because you have taken all the fish from them, what happens to them? "Denounces Jean-Luc Mélenchon.
