Boulaye Dia profited from a defensive mistake shortly before the interval to put the Teranga Lions ahead, while Famara Diedhiou headed in well-taken corner-kick by Ismail Jakobs early on in the second half.

There was something to savour for the hosts as Mohammed Muntari headed home in the 78th minute to become Qatar’s first-ever goalscorer at the FIFA World Cup, but their joy was short-lived as Bamba Dieng fired home late on to seal the points and guarantee the win for coach Aliou Cisse’s side.

Qatar are now almost certain to end their first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance on a negative note, with a first-round exit in the group stages already looming. As for Senegal, they have earned Africa’s first victory at the 2022 Mundial in the Middle Eastern nation.
