FG, Sultan signs MoU on out-of-school children
The Federal Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, on reducing out-of-school children through re-admission into classes.
The document was signed in Argungu, Kebbi State, by the Sultan and the Deputy Executive Secretary, Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Dr Abdulrazaq Akinyele, who represented the Executive Secretary.
Speaking at the occasion, the Sultan said traditional rulers were determined to reduce street begging by children and return them to the classroom.
He said, “Begging is not sanctioned by Islam; we are committed to returning street kids to school.”
He called on the public, especially the well-to-do, to extend their benevolence to orphans roaming the streets after losing their parents to insurgency and banditry.
“I’m thanking the Kebbi State Government and Governor Nasir Idris for taking over the Argungu Orphanage towards ensuring proper care and formal supervision,” the Sultan said.
The Kebbi State Deputy Governor, Umar Abubakar Tafida, who represented Governor Nasir Idris, formally took over the administration of the Orphanage on behalf of the state government.
