Mali’s ousted President, Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta dies aged 76

Family reports indicate that, Mali’s former President, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita has died in his residence in capital, Bamako on Sunday January 16, 2022.

In a statement, the family said “President IBK (Ibrahim Boubacar Keita) died this morning at 9am (GMT and local) at his home in Bamako.”

The family did not detail the cause of death in the statement; however, reports have it that, the former president earlier suffered a minor stroke two years ago.

Ibrahim Boubacar Keita became president of the country by recording a landslide victory against his opponent, Soumaila Cisse in the 2013 election. Five years later, his mandate was renewed.

The 76-year-old was serving his second term when his regime was toppled in the Assimi Goita led coup which took place in August 2020.

The country is currently under military command with the junta facing series of sanctions from West Africa’s regional bloc, ECOWAS.
