In Senegal, Supreme Tijaniya leader confirms appointment of former Emir Sanusi as Caliph in Nigeria

The supreme leader of Tijaniya movement, Sheikh Mahi Niass, has confirmed the appointment of former emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi, as the leader of the movement in Nigeria.

The appointment of the country representative, called caliph or khalifa, has become controversial of late, following March 13 premature announcement of the former emir by the representative of the sect leader during Maulud celebrations in Sokoto.

DAILY NIGERIAN gathered that in order to formally announce the decision, the Tijaniya leaders invited the former emir to Kaolack, Senegal for the closing ceremony of Ramadan Tafsir on Sunday.

Announcing the decision during the event, Sheikh Mahi tasked the former emir to rise to the occasion and be good ambassador of the order in Nigeria.

The position was previously held by the late Emir of Kano Sanusi (Mr Sanusi’s late grandfather) and lately held by the late philanthropist Khalifa Isyaku Rabiu.

Prior to Monday announcement, the supporters of Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi were also claiming that the nonagenarian sheikh was naturally the leader.
