As The Gambia clocks 56, President Barrow Vows to Defend the Sovereignty of the Country

Addressing the public at the country's 56th independence anniversary, President Barrow pledged to continue defending the sovereignty of the country and protecting the freedom and liberties of the people.

“The Gambia’s attainment of Independence on 18th February 1965 was chiefly about sovereignty and self-determination. Globally, these ideals are reflected in the freedom people enjoy in order to lawfully pursue their interests, progress and wellbeing, ” he observed.

The President urged Gambians to make use of those liberties to exploit existing opportunities, promote socio-political values, and engage in activities that enhance national development.

“How far we go and how high The Gambia flag flies depend on how united we are and how closely we work towards attaining our national targets, ” President Barrow said.

Today marks precisely 56 years since the independence of The Gambia from colonial rule. The day was commemorated by our gallant men and women in uniform in a low key but a lively ceremony marked by a dazzling parade.
