Over 100 inmates on death row in Kano correctional centre begs for pardon — Official
The Controller of Corrections, Kano state Command , Suleiman M. Inuwa, has revealed that over 100 inmates are pleading for pardon in the state.
Mr Inuwa disclosed this while presenting a list of inmates who had formally applied for clemency to the chairperson of the Kano state Prerogative of Mercy Committee, Azumi Namadi-Bebeji, during a visit to the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Janguza, Kano on Thursday.
The chairperson, according to statement by spokesman of the Correctional Service, Musbahu Lawan, received the list of Inmates on Death Row, IDR, those serving life imprisonment as well as those serving long sentences.
He said also, inmates with serious medical challenges, elderly inmates and other classes of inmates in the state made the list.
The chairperson assured the Controller that she would present their cases to the Executive Governor of Kano state.
She equally assured the inmates that government would look into their conditions based on the attestation of good conduct and character while in custody to be made by the Correctional Service.
He said the chairperson expressed delight as some inmates memorized the Holy Quran as well as those that got 9 credits in the National Examination Council, NECO and NBIS, adding that they are now seeking admission into the National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN.
The Chairperson called on all inmates to obey the rules of the Custodial Centre and be productive to themselves and the society.
The} Controller, on hi remarks, appreciated the Chairperson for shouldering the Iftar feeding Programme in the facility and that the Service is happy with the positive result in decongesting the Custodial Centres.
He went further to say that, ‘Many have already exhausted their appeals, while some are seeking for clemency.’
