A friend of a mobile police corporal has shot him dead on the premises of a commercial bank in Bayelsa State where the cop was detailed.
A source in the bank told Daily Trust that the incident happened last Wednesday on the premises of the bank along the D.S.P Alameisegha road in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital when both were about having lunch.
The source said while the mobile policeman left his rifle on a bench and was washing spoons, his friend picked up the rifle, shot him at close range in the back and fled with the rifle.
He also informed Daily Trust that the deceased introduced the suspected killer identified as David to officials of the bank last week as his kinsman.
According to the source, investigations showed that the deceased policeman hailed from Nembe community while the suspected killer is from Liama in Brass Local Government Area of the state.
It was gathered that the suspected killer had been staying on the bank premises.
“The incident happened around noon on Wednesday when they were both about to take lunch. While the deceased mobile policeman left his rifle on the bench and was washing the spoons, the killer picked up the rifle and shot him at close range in the back.
“He was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre where he was confirmed dead the next day,” the source said.
The police spokesman in Bayelsa State, SP Asinim Butswat, who confirmed the incident, said the identity of the suspect is known and investigation is ongoing to arrest him.
He said: “On 29 December 2022, a policeman, Cpl Bob on duty at a bank in Yenagoa strayed from his duty post and was attacked by someone he was having a conversation with outside the banking premises. The identity of the suspect is known and investigation is underway to arrest him.”
