Fulbe Africa Announces New Partnership as Members Begin Livestock Study Tour in the Netherlands.

The Fulbe Africa Organisation has unveiled a significant new partnership aimed at strengthening sustainable livestock management among pastoralist communities in The Gambia. The initiative, facilitated by former president of the association, Mr. Alieu Sowe, fondly known as Ali Wazza Sow and Dutch livestock farmer Mr. Peter Steenbergen, marks a new chapter in cross-cultural collaboration and skills exchange.

At a press conference held yesterday in Abuko, Fulbe Africa announced that two of its members had departed for the Netherlands to embark on a two-week intensive study tour. The program will equip participants with modern livestock-management techniques that can be adapted to benefit pastoralist communities back home.

This partnership follows Mr. Steenbergen’s visit to The Gambia in April, during which he and his family toured the Central River Region and engaged with local cattle farmers. They were introduced to the time-honored Fulani herding traditions, an experience that deepened their appreciation of both the cultural heritage and the current challenges faced by pastoral communities.

With grazing land rapidly shrinking due to population pressure, farmland expansion, and rising real estate development, experts say a shift toward more modern and sustainable livestock systems has become increasingly urgent. The new collaboration aims to support pastoralists in navigating these changes while safeguarding Fulani cultural identity and promoting harmony between farmers and herders.

The association extended heartfelt gratitude to the Steenbergen family for their continued support and commitment to empowering Gambian livestock communities.

Fulbe Africa says it remains committed to initiatives that build capacity, strengthen cultural pride, and improve livelihoods for livestock dependent communities across the country.
