Detention of opponents of the 3rd term: France slaps its fist on the table and threatens the power of Alpha Condé

Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian on Wednesday called on President Alpha Condé to shed light on the detention of third-term opponents for months.  The head of French diplomacy brandishes a threat of sanctions if the Conakry regime does not budge.

During a session of “Oral questions without debate” at the National Assembly, Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian recalled that on November 7, “the Guinean Constitutional Court confirmed the victory of Mr. Alpha Condé in the first  presidential election round.  We have taken note of it.

Upstream of the electoral process, he stressed, `` France and the European Union expressed both their questions about the conduct of the electoral process, and condemned the violence that broke out following this  ballot ''.

On several occasions, noted the head of French diplomacy, "we have stressed the need for an internal political dialogue between the authorities and the opposition in order to allow the reconciliation of all Guineans who deserve a peaceful political climate.  That's not the case today.  I had the opportunity to tell President Alpha Condé myself a short time ago during the installation of the President of Ghana.  The Secretary of State reminded him of this during his inauguration ".

France says "very vigilant on respect for human rights" before condemning "we condemn the continuation of detentions outside legal proceedings of opponents".

The French Minister of Foreign Affairs underlines that it is the "responsibility of the president to take the necessary initiatives", while recalling that with the European Union, "we have asked the authorities of Guinea to do all the  light on the events unfolding at the moment, with possible measures to be taken if this light is not shed ''.

At the same time, he says, "we want to continue our assistance to the Guinean population so that they do not fall victim to these behaviors twice".
