US Newspaper praises Prince Philip but associates DMX with negativity
The consistency with which western tabloids associate people of African descent with negativity is becoming worrisome; at every least opportunity, these newspapers always find a way to paint black people bad. Even at their best.
The recent discriminatory report on the front page of American newspaper, the New York Daily News concerning the death of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and that of rapper and actor, Earl Simmons popularly known as DMX is a typical example of this worrying trend.
The two individuals, now deceased have been and are still being mourned by their respective families, loved ones and those they have impacted in a way or the other. The best to do at this moment is to give the families enough support as they go through these difficult moments.
The family of DMX for instance demanded this in a statement that reads: “Please respect our privacy as we grieve the loss of our brother, father, uncle, and the man the world knew as DMX.”
However, the Daily News could not deal with its inherent racial discrimination even at the face of grief. In reporting the death of the two, the tabloid chose to describe the Prince as a “Beloved royal” whilst describing the rapper as a “troubled musician” on its front page.
This is callous and very worrying, especially looking at the emotional context within which this publication was done. Daily News is not the only Tabloid which engages in this sort of bias reportage. This totally defeats the purpose of efforts the world has invested in fighting systemic racism and bringing humanity together.
According to Buckingham Palace, the prince, who was husband to queen Elizabeth II died after being hospitalized several times in recent years for various ailments, most recently in the month of February.
The family of DMX on the other hand said in a statement that, he “passed away at 50 years old at White Plains Hospital with his family by his side after being placed on life support for the past few days.”
