Jigawa governor orders closure of all schools, requests parents to evacuate children

The Jigawa State Government has announced the closure of public and private secondary and primary schools with immediate effect.

This was contained in a terse statement signed and made available to journalists by the acting Permanent Secretary Ministry of Education science and Technology, Rabiu Adamu, in Dutse.

The statement advises parents to prepare for the evacuation of their children back home on Wednesday, December 16.

Although the statement did not mention reasons for the closure, spokesman for the governor, Auwal Sankara, clarified to DAILY NIGERIAN that the decision was taken to check the spread of COVID-19 in the state.

As escalation in the cases of COVID-19 infections in the country forces some states to shut down schools, resurgence of abduction and banditry forces others to take the decision.

In the wake of mass abductions of schoolboys in Kankara, the Katsina State Government shut boarding schools, while the Zamfara State Government, which shares borders with Katsina, took a similar decision to forestall recurrence of the Kankara incident.

On the spike in coronavirus cases, the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has shut down schools in the state, following reported resurgence of COVID-19 infections in the state.
