Realize that our prayers provide a function to the universe. The cosmos and all the creatures of the earth depend upon the prayers of humanity. When I say prayers, I do not mean just supplication and entreaty of Allah. I mean the formal salaat which comprise of the takbir al-ihraam, the standing (qiyaam), the bowing (rukuu`), the prostration (sujuud), the sitting (jalsa), the recitation, glorification, extolling and humility.

by Shaykh Muhammad Shareef bin Fari

This formal prayer prescribed for this blessed Umma of Muhammad, is a function of khilaafa (vicegerency to GOD) on behalf of creation. Creation’s existence is justified and explained by the presence of humanity praying the five obligatory prayers.

Just as Allah made the existence of the Temple  for the ancient Banu Isra’il as the symbol and function for creation; in that creation worshipped GOD through the existence and rites performed in the Temple; likewise Allah ta`ala blessed this Umma Muhammad with an individualized ‘temple’ which is the prayer (salaat).

Each individual Muslim performs the same function to creation, that the Hebrew priest performed in his daily rites on the holy grounds of the Temple. Each Muslim who prays becomes the voice of creation to GOD; and in their Quranic recitation they become the voice of GOD to creation.

This is what Sayyidnaa Isa ibn Maryum, meant by the “temple of GOD being inside you.” He, upon him be peace, was describing the worship of the Umma of Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. He was foretelling of the descent of the true Temple of GOD, where each individual chooses to purify themselves and prepare themselves to be a Temple of the Living GOD.

So when you stand for prayer stand for all of humanity and creation. When you bow down glorifying Him, bow down as a representative of all creation. When you prostrate, fall down in obeisance to Him, not just for yourself, or those following you, your family,…but for the whole of creation. Send blessings upon Muhammad and his family, ask for mercy for the Umma of Muhammad and for all of creation.

When you repent and seek forgiveness of sins, remember the sins of all humanity, and beg Allah to forgive the Umma of Muhammad and ask Him to be merciful to whole of creation; and to suffice creation where existence is unable.

It is for this reason Allah ta`ala says:

وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ * مَا أُرِيدُ مِنْهُم مِّن رِّزْقٍ وَمَا أُرِيدُ أَن يُطْعِمُونِ * إِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ الرَّزَّاقُ ذُو الْقُوَّةِ الْمَتِينُ

“And I have not created the djinn and humanity except that they should worship Me. I do not want any sustenance from them, and nor do I want them to feed Me. Indeed, Allah, He is the Provider, the Possessor of Firm Power”. [51:56-58]

That is to say, that our function and purpose in creation is to worship Allah ta`ala. Not the involuntary worship of the galaxies, the stars, the mountains, the trees and every living creature; but the voluntary and willful worship of GOD by choice. “Choice” is a blessing which GOD has given humanity and djinn which distinguishes us from the whole of automatonic creation.

Of the two species, djinn and humanity, GOD chose the worship of humanity to be His vicegerent (khilaafa) and the means through which GOD is known; because all the scholars of Quranic exegesis agree that His words: “I have not created the djinn and humanity except that they should worship Me”; means so that they should know Me as I should be known.

And Allah ta`ala distinguished humanity over the djinn by His words:

“And I taught Adam all the Names.” It is through gnosis of GOD as a result of worship that humanity has been granted khilaafa. Success is with Allah!
