Chad: Idriss Deby’s state funeral scheduled for Friday

Military officials announced on Tuesday, hours after reports of Chad President Idriss Déby Itno’s death on the battlefield, that his funeral will be held on Friday.

The president of Chad, who had been in office for three decades, died during a visit to the front lines of the rebel group’s campaign, according to a military spokesperson.

The funeral will be held “in the presence of heads of state and government of friendly countries,” according to the military council.

According to the presidency, the funeral will take place in Ndjamena, the country’s capital, before being transported to his native area in the country’s east.

Following the president’s assassination, some feared a military invasion and the transition of power to Deby’s son.

After being elected temporary leader of the Central African republic, rebels have threatened to depose the son of the assassinated president.

The rebel faction that the military blamed for the death of President Idriss Deby Itno said its troops were moving on N’Djamena, the country’s capital.
